TNDC
210 GOLDEN GATE

San Francisco, California • 1,300 Sq. Ft.

The mission of TNDC is to develop community and provide affordable housing and services for people with low incomes in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources.

When the nonprofit affordable housing developer, had the opportunity to occupy this corner location, they envisioned the space for two community-engaging programs: Community Organizing and Food Distribution.

The location presented the perfect opportunity for TNDC to activate the streets and advocate for their tenants. Inside, a center wall was built to create separate spaces for the two programs’ needs. The front section was reserved for community gatherings and food distribution, while the back remains a functionable workspace for Community Organizing.

Barn doors and rustic finishes draw upon the concept of a farmer’s market, and the bold pattern of the carpet reflects the surrounding urban life. To soften the liveliness of the space, acoustical ceiling panels were integrated with the lighting in a simple pattern. Local muralists were commissioned by TNDC to further acknowledge the diversity and beauty of the Tenderloin neighborhood.
